KIDZ IN SPACE x Buckets Magazine:

Kidz In Space receive a full page feature in the very first issue of Buckets magazine, on the back of "Downtime" being featured on NBA 2K11.

Gamers may have had to wait until October 2010 to enjoy the fruits of NBA 2K11 but the titles journey commenced way back in March with the Duck Down Music x 2K Sports MC/Producer Search.

Understanding the success and aura that surrounds the annual NBA 2K soundtrack, Duck Down Music collaborated with 2K Sports in hope of unearthing a crop of garden fresh talent. Rolling out in two phases, the Producer Contest asked for one sample-free instrumental with Bay Roots Productions received 47% of the 200,000 plus votes that were cast, earning them the right to be featuring on the 2K11 soundtrack.

From there, Bay Root’s winning instrumental track was used as backing for the MC Contest which asked for one clean song. Finalists were posted on XXL Magazines’ website with Yung Automatik chosen as the Grand prize winner. As Vice President of Marketing for 2K Sports, Jason Argent stated, “fans of the franchise will once again have a soundtrack that matches the quality of the acclaimed gameplay.”

Video games haven’t always enjoyed bumping soundtracks but in recent years the NBA 2K franchise has released an annual collection of music which has become a must have companion piece. Knowing their NBA gaming franchise is a true global force – NBA 2K10 sold over two million units worldwide – the producers of the NBA 2K11 soundtrack fitted their nozzles and went deep sea music diving to catch the biggest and freshest sounds.

The resulting NBA 2K11 album features tracks from Snoop Dogg (NBA 2K11 Theme), Big Boi (Shutterbug), Drake (Over), Ron Artest (Champion), The Alan Parsons Project (Sirius), Art vs. Science (Hollywood), Big Rock Candy Mountain (Rocketship), competition winners Yung Autmatik & Bayroot Productions (Go Hard or Go Home) and New Zealand’s inter-galactical pop visionaries, Kidz in Space (and their hit Downtime). Landing on the NBA 2K11 soundtrack is no joke, so we decided to launch
ourselves into the night’s sky to catch up with the Kidz – Joshua Fountain, Ashley Hughes and Matthew Neshat – in hopes of learning a secret or two about life on the 2K planet.

Firstly, for those readers out there who aren’t familiar with the gravity defying act known as Kidz in Space, can you give us a quick but intergalactic introduction? (how long have you been together? Where did you all meet? Who’s responsible for the
name?)

We’ve been together almost two years now [as a group], Matt and I kind of grew up together and one day on a lazy Sunday flight through space we bumped into Josh and his mad beats – we decided right there and then to form Kidz in Space. The name was something we came up with to explain our music being completely limitless, so the “space” aspect was amust... Plus, anyone remember Pigs in Space from The Muppets?

It’s the obvious question but it needs to be asked… did you ever imagine your music would land on a video game soundtrack, let alone a basketball video game soundtrack featuring Michael Jordan (as its cover athlete)?

Hell no!!! From a young age I’ve always been into gaming and to know our song is on NBA 2K11 is amazing!!! I used to be jealous about a couple of my friends who feature on other sports games (NRL) and be like ‘wow’. Now Downtime is on NBA 2K11, I think I’ve got them beat! The fact that Michael Jordan, king of the NBA, is on the cover, is mind-blowing... I wonder if my cousins will ask if I know him?

The NBA 2K11 soundtrack is quite an eclectic mix of artists. Is it an honour to have your sound (so early in your musical journey) appear alongside names like Big Boi, the Alan Parsons Project, Drake and Art vs. Science?

Very much so. These are artists we’ve grown up listening to and have long admired. For a group from little old New Zealand to be in such great company is crazy and being that it is so early in our musical journey – who knows where we can go from here?

I don’t know of anyone who has grown up listening to and loving video game soundtracks (I may be wrong) but what do you believe are the ingredients for a memorable soundtrack? video-game or otherwise?

I would have to say in my opinion, variety is extremely important, but also music that complements the gameplay and narrative.

In case this is the first time NBA 2K11 gamers, or our readers, are aware of Kidz in Space, what can fans expect to hear from the group in 2011?

Our album Ghost is out in New Zealand and Australia this October via MTC Records. We’ll shoot a few more crazy video clips and there’s a top secret new direction with our live show... basically everything will be BIGGER in 2011!

Lastly, other than hearing your own track boom during a tight game, what are you most looking forward to on NBA 2K11 and will you be taking a copy of the game with you on the road?

I will most definitely be an addict to this game. I had already been anticipating it and now we’re on the soundtrack I can’t wait to check out the new game play – and it can’t hurt to hear the commentators actually say “Michael Jordan” apposed to “Player 23”, I’ll be setting up competitions to face off with friends, no doubt. I’m sure a lot of practise time will be going into this one.
