YOUNG SID - All Time Fave:

I missed this on the Real Groove site when it was initially posted.

And for the record, Ready To Die; is better! LOL!

ALL TIME FAVE:
By: Young Sid

From NZ Artists: April 2010

There are a lot of albums out there that I love to death – Scarface’s The Fix and Bone Thugs-N-Harmony’s Creepin on Ah Come Up being two of them. I was a huge fan of Bone Thugs-N-Harmony from ’94 to ’98 before the buzz that they had going on died out, but when I hear all their old stuff today it takes me back to the good ol’ days.

My man Scarface is my number one rapper of all time – he speaks the truth, he has a unique voice and when he spits he does it effortlessly – it’s like he’s just talking to one person. The Fix is an album that I can play from beginning-to-end without pausing; his songs are about living without holding any punches, and he calls it how he sees it.

Although Face is my favourite rapper of all time, my favourite album of all time would have to be 2Pac’s All Eyez on Me.
I was introduced to this album by my older brother Mr Sicc, who dubbed it on a tape for me. Every song on that album was a hit – the production from Dr Dre and Daz Dillinger had a lot to do with it being as good as it is, because Dre was a beast when it came to making beats and Daz was a dope-as beat maker also.

My favourite songs on the album are Only God Can Judge Me, Wonda Why They Call You Bitch, Picture Me Rollin – no rap fan can deny those tracks.

I remember on the last trip to New York, MTC’s Kirk Harding and I got into a big discussion about whether The Notorious BIG’s Ready to Die or 2Pac’s All Eyez on Me was better – and we had to agree to disagree – ha ha!

Pac was fearless – he didn’t care about people that judged him, and whatever he said he stuck by it – he knew how to make songs for people to relate to.

DROPPIN' KNOWLEDGE - The State Of The Nation:

It hasn't happened in a while, but here it is, my periodic rant. I know that these spiels are posted on an irregular basis, but I have to wait until inspiration hits me, and inspiration sure did come crashing down on me today.

You see, this is a State of the Nation; although i do realize that it is somewhat of an outsiders perspective, because i have lived far away from our scene for close to 11 years. But it is still something that I believe will ring true with everyone reading this post.

First things first, let's take care of some basic housekeeping.

We at MTC have been fucking busy. I hope you have noticed, because that is the point; We want you to notice! We shifted up a gear a while ago with our work rate, and you are only now starting to see the fruits of our labor.

Its funny to think that when the Smashproof album dropped (which was a definite turning point for the label), most of our peers commented that we deserved success. They said this because they respected our work rate, and by stating that, I initially thought that this meant that they were fronting on our music and just trying to focus on saying something positive about us. And maybe that is true? But i'm glad that people have recognized the work ethic and it only served to make us work harder.

The core team behind the scenes team has not changed throughout this growth. But the roster has certainly grown. Which means that Aaron, Juse, Dkays, and now Wynn, Rocky and Duncan have been carrying a lot of weight. We have also been focused on a movement (no pun intended). A movement that means so much to our everyday lives.

The behind the scenes stuff is usually boring to discuss, but amongst it we have been signing new acts (which involves negotiating back and forth), and trying to sign acts, we were successful in signing a few while others felt that they weren't the right fit for us. Our deal with Universal Australia just came to a close, which has been tricky because we had to ensure that we maintained focus on making sure that nothing rocked our release schedule.

The deal you ask? Yes, we are free agents as such. Which is rather wonderful all things considered. No, not because we hate Universal or major labels. And certainly not because we want to get all Radiohead/Nine Inch Nails on you and invent a new method to distribute and sell our music either. It is great because it represents change. And change is a good thing. Its time that we took a look at our current paradigm and addressed how MTC and our team can collectively take the next step, and this forces our hand to do just that.

Its also positive news because they left us with seven projects completed or near completion. Which is a great place to be in when it comes to determining how we should move forward.

I'm not mad at Universal Australia. They have been great partners and have been very supportive over the past six years. The bottom line is that Australia was seen as viable market for NZ Hip Hop when we inked our deal with them back in the day. But things have since changed. And that change means that despite the volume of releases that we have ready to go, we exist in a genre that is not seen as being viable in the current musical climate in that market. And I'm cool with that. It merely forces us to look elsewhere at markets where we probably should have been looking to more aggressively anyway.

So that's that.

We have some tricks up our sleeve and all of this change won't have any effect on our release schedule.

So without further adieu, I present to you our current album release schedule:

Deach - Vision, July 19

Kidz In Space - Ghost, September 20

Tyree - Motivation, October

Sir T - Walk With Me, October

Kayo - Versus, November

Derty Sesh - No Apologies, February

We also have a Neesh mixtape yet to drop and the latest edition in the Speed Of Sound mixtape series on the way.

So now that that's out of the way, let's get to what really inspired me to write this...

I have to say that I am awestruck when I look at how our local "urban" scene is progressing at the moment. There is so much going on in NZ at the moment and it's a wonder to behold. I know this, because I meet someone new almost every time I log on to Facebook; and when i take the time to converse with them and listen to what they are doing - i am mostly left with a very positive impression.

I tell no lies! This is the honest truth. Do you know how amazing that is? Lets just stop for a moment and consider how far we have come.

When this scene started back in the day it involved a handful of folks. The way i look at the history of our scene is somewhat similar to the shape of a giant pyramid At the top of the pyramid, or the peak, sit Upper Hutt Posse, George Hubbard, OJ & Slave and countless others.

Then we move to the layer below with DLT's solo work, Termoana's solo material, Joint Force, Gifted & Brown, Urban Disturbance, Rough Opinion, Che Fu, Pacific Descendants, King Kapisi, DAM Native, OMC etc... you get the gist.

Every year there are more players. We started at the top of the pyramid and the base continues to spread wider and wider as we travel down the pyramid to the next generation. And its only because the previous generation's work serves to influence the new generation.

I mean, how many MC's were birthed from "Chains", "Behold My Cool Style", "Not Many" and "Brother"?

And check us out now...

We now have a burgeoning R&B scene! When did this happen? R&B was a dirty word in NZ until recent times. But thanks to the work of artists such as Chong Nee, Nesian Mystik, Vince Harder Pieter T, J Williams, Erekah, Robin Howard Johnson, Jae'O etc, the scene is vibrant and alive. Kudos to you all.

We also have now a dedicated NZ Hip Hop blog in Ayebro.co.nz. Our very own version of Nahright, 2DopeBoyz or Rap Radar if you will. We also continue to have the HipHopNZ forum. I have to say that respect is due to Prodigal for being higher up on that pyramid and inspiring the new online homes for local Hip Hop.

And last but not least, there are SO many talented new MC's out there at the moment, and I wish we had the resources to pick more of them up. Just look around folks. In almost as many weeks I came across three new unsigned Hip Hop acts, all of whom have huge potential. Resin & Stash, 5A and The Embassy should hold their heads high, because they are on the way to doing good things with their careers.

Deach and crew are doing their thing on weekly basis with their regular nights at Bacio, and we are also fortunate to have a great event in The Gathering, both of which are helping to bring to new talent to the live arena.

And then there are the established heads... i just recently learned that my dudes from Dawn Raid have clicked up with Dirty Management for a few projects and they are looking at several options here in the US and at home in NZ together! I didn't see that one coming. But that union can only be a positive thing for all, and best believe that they are working on some positive things together.

I told Andy Murnane last night that i truly believe that our scene is as good as any one State in the U.S in terms of depth of talent and the quality of the music that is being produced, and i mean that.

So please continue to hit me up if you see me online. I might take a minute to holla back at times, but as most people that have reached out will tell you; I will get back at you. I welcome all correspondence and look forward to hearing your music. Its fuckin' exciting and inspires me on all levels. Keep doing your thing!

YOUNG SID To Appear On Maori Television's SOUND OF HOPE:

SOUNDS OF HOPE is a significant part of Maori Television’s broadcast, on child abuse and violence against children, that features our own Young Sid with Mr Sicc; and sees the homie Chris Graham on directorial duties.

SOUNDS OF HOPE GOES TO AIR ON SUNDAY 27 JUNE AT 9:10PM AND WILL REPLAY ON MONDAY 28 JUNE AT 10PM.

Maori Television marks Maori New Year, Matariki, with a two-night landmark broadcast to show how all New Zealanders can help to halt child abuse, and to tell – in compelling mini-documentary style – the inspiring stories of how families have emerged from the darkness of family violence.

TAMARIKI ORA: A NEW BEGINNING is a total of five hours of primetime programming over two nights: Sunday June 27 and Monday June 28. It comprises:

TAMARIKI ORA: A NEW BEGINNING (PART 1) – Sunday June 27 at 8.00 PM: Carol Hirschfeld introduces the honest, raw stories of men and women who made the courageous decisions to confront the violence in their midst. Find out how Kahurangi changed her life after her partner killed her three-year-old daughter; and meet Pat, who took action after she saw her son following her down a violent path. Learn why the first three years of a baby’s life determines its future; and get an insider’s look at Starship’s child crisis team in action. The directors are award-winners Kathleen Mantel, Michael Bennett and Karen MacKenzie.

TAMARIKI ORA: THE SOUNDS OF HOPE – Sunday June 27 at 9.10 PM: Che Fu and Tigi Ness, Warren Maxwell, Maisey Rika, Hollie Smith, Young Sid and Mr Sicc, Dallas Tamaira, The Bellbirds and Wellington’s Kotuku Choir are among the artists who invite us into their homes for intimate acoustic performances dedicated to the children of New Zealand. This outstanding musical documentary is by award-winning music-video director Chris Graham.

TAMARIKI ORA: A NEW BEGINNING (PART 2) – Monday June 28 at 8.00 PM: Families share their remarkable stories of how they turned away from violence. Ex-gang member Hurae recounts the horrifying sight that sparked his transformation from vicious abuser to community worker; and young mum Arnita explains how an innovative programme which videotapes parent-child conversations teaches her to be a better parent. Eminent historian Dame Anne Salmond explores how children were brought up in pre-colonial times; and we hear the evidence that New Zealand’s widening social inequality is fuelling violence. Solo mum-turned-Cabinet Minister Paula Bennett, police detective Scott Beard, former Children’s Commissioner Ian Hassall, Manu Caddie from Tairawhiti Men Against Violence and Anglican minister Dr Hone Kaa are among the special guests who will join Carol Hirschfeld in the studio to discuss the

YOUNG SID x debate:

Young Sid talks to debate
TUESDAY, 15 JUNE, 2010 | CURRENT ISSUE, NEWS
Interview with Mike Atkins

SOURCE: AUSM

This is a student magazine, mostly written by students, and the way interviews are edited make us look more professional than we in fact are. During this interview, Young Sid said one of the saddest things I’ve ever heard (you’ll see it when you come to it), and my reaction was to stammer, say something ponsy (which was edited out) and follow up with a question about accents. Even listening back to it, I had to make a cup of tea, and take a walk. The man has some intense stuff to say. I met with him in a recording studio at MTC headquarters, which is by far the coolest environment in which I’ve ever interviewed anyone, to talk about writing music, honesty and the media spotlight.

debate: So, you’re still writing stuff? I always wondered how that worked.

Young Sid: You thought people put out albums, and then they just went “pfft”…?

debate: Yeah, pretty much, and then came back when it was time for the next one.

Young Sid: Nah, I’ve got other jobs, y’know people want me to feature on their songs, and stuff like that. They want me to host mixtapes, and give drops, and all that shit. So, I’ve been doing that. And sometimes I’ll write songs for the sake of… just doing songs. So that when someone wants a song, I can just go “here”, instead of writing a whole new one.

debate: The ones on the album had the sound of something that’s quite spontaneous, and emotional. Do you have any concerns about putting emotions like that out there on an album?

Young Sid: Not really man. I was going through some shit at that stage in my life, which is why I wrote those things. It’s like a photo to me, like a memory, those songs. So, I don’t mind.

debate: So, it’s less a question of honesty, and more a question of… just what you do? So, that shit that was happening in your life, and which influenced that album, do you feel a responsibility to put that on the album.

Young Sid: It’s a possibility. It really just came from what I was feeling at the time. It was a spontaneous thing, to write whatever I was going through. I don’t really feel a responsibility on that album….Well, maybe one one song: a song called Wanna Be Like. That’s a song where I had to be responsible because I have a lot of kids come up to me, and act the way that the song plays out. So, I had to be the responsible one, and say “I’m not trying to turn anyone into little criminals, or anything, I’m just making music”. But a lot of people don’t see it that way. [The way they see it] I’ve got to be responsible in the youths’ eyes in order for them not to become criminals. Even though it’s not my fault the way they turn out. I maybe play a little bit of a role in their life because they like my music.

debate: There’s that rhyme about the TV3 cameras. do you feel the media is putting you in that spot where they’re forcing you to give your side of things?

Young Sid: Yeah, that’s Whatever Doesn’t Kill Me, the title track. I wrote that in 08, so it came at the right time, where I was going through all that shit. The police were grilling me, there was police profiling, and quite a bit of media scrutiny. I kinda had to step up, and explain a lot of things. So that everyone who thought that I was that kind of person could get a better understanding of what I was trying to do for my neighborhood, which is just getting us out there, and getting our voices heard.

debate: TV3 made a big deal of that scene in that Smashproof video, didn’t they?

Young Sid: Yes, the stabbing of Pihema Cameron. They made a big deal. Because the song wasn’t about that; the song was about a lot of things that were happening in South Auckland at the time. But they chose to highlight that because, at the time, the guy was getting sentenced. So, it was just timing for that song to come out at that time. And they wanted to create something. It helped out that song.

debate: The honesty that you show in other songs makes me believe that everything that you say isn’t just a story. But for instance, the song about jacking cars…

Young Sid: Oh, that one. That one was a story; something that happened to a couple of friends of mine. There’s a lot of people in my neighborhood that do that sort of shit, and I just wanted to write a story about it. The end is bullshit, the start [of the story] is stuff that really happened, but the end is bullshit. My mate and his friends did one of those, but [unlike in the song] he didn’t get away. He crashed the car and died. But the other two got away, he dropped them off before the crash, and they got away with the shit, but he crashed, and died. I chose to switch it around, so that he got away, but it didn’t work, he’s still dead.

debate: That’s still honesty then, you’re talking about something that really did happen.

Young Sid: Yeah, just switching it around.

debate: You don’t try to hide your Kiwi accent either. Is that something you thought about?

Young Sid: Nah, I think that on some songs it’s more of an American accent, because that’s what I’m influenced by, American songs. I didn’t really notice that I was rapping in a Kiwi accent. So, you can hear it?

debate: Yeah, totally.

Young Sid: Sweet, that’s good for me.

debate: I got the feeling that the album was an autobiographical piece. Did that come into it?

Young Sid: A lot of the songs are about me, and my environment, so you’re right about that. I already had another solo album, The Truth, and that was about how I was feeling at the time too. I just go of the state that I’m in. At the time that The Truth came out, I was hanging with my gangsta friends, and all the bravado, and being tough, that comes of being 18, 19, 20. That’s what I was speaking of at the time. This album, being a lot more grown-up, I chose to just give people my heart, man. Just go deep.

debate: Because you were really out there, and it’s really quite emotional. How do you feel about the success that came of being part of Smashproof?

Young Sid: I feel really good. It put us all on that level where we can go out on our own. It gave us a huge hand up. The Young Sid stuff is a bit bigger, because I’m able to be a mainstream artist, because of Smashproof. But at the same time, I can still speak the truth, and call it as I see it.

debate: So, when you said you were writing songs all the time, does that [your level of success] influence what goes onto an album, and what doesn’t?

Young Sid: Yep. We write a song, we send it overseas to Kirk Harding, and he says “yay”, or “nay”. If it’s a no, we chuck it on a mix tape. We say, you don’t have to buy it, we’ll just give it away. But if he says yep, and it goes on an album, that’s cool. But a lot of my songs, I wrote specifically for that album, so I didn’t need a “yay” or a “nay”; I just wrote it, and it’s on. Because I’ve got exec rights on my album too.

debate: How did working with Stan Walker come about?

Young Sid: Kirk got in touch with his people, at first they said “no” because they didn’t know who we were. Then they came back to us, and said “is that song still available”? We only added him on in March, because the chorus had already been written, by Tyree. That’s another song that’s really old; I wrote in in December 08. It had no chorus for like six months, then Tyree wrote a chorus, then like nine months later, Stan Walker’s singing the chorus. Then the album was finished, that’s all we were waiting for.

I know that people are going to say, “he’s going the Brother route, he’s trying to to do Brother again”. But we wrote that before Brother came out.

debate: Oh, yeah, Because Brother had Gin on it, What’s was that like, working with her?

Young Sid: She’s cool, she’s crazy, she’s just like a dude, likes to have a good time. And she’s got a good voice. That gave us the cross-over success. On that song we all wrote the hook together…

debate: Really? Even Gin?

Young Sid: Oh nah. She’s just the voice for it. But she’s a cool chick, talented.

debate: Because, I know that that’s something that a lot of rappers do. When they have other people doing the choruses, they write their own bits. Do you ever do that?

Young Sid: Only on that one song on my album: it’s called Here, Then Gone [about the death of Sid's mother], the girl who did that: Melanie Fiona, she wrote the chorus for that. She called me up from America, and asked “what do you want for it”? I said “just don’t make it too sad, make it inspirational”.

Smashproof MC DEACH raps it alone:

SOURCE: Sunday News
By: Steve Hopkins

WHEN you've been part of a record-breaking hip-hop group, releasing solo work and rapping on stage alone is "pretty overwhelming".

So says Smashproof MC Deach – the last of the award-winning trio to release his own music.

Real name Fred Faafou, the rapper's debut EP Vision hits stores next month, although his first single, Till I Say So, is already available on iTunes and New Zealand download site digiRAMA.

"I felt a lot of pressure at the start," Deach told Sunday News, admitting to feeling a little "vulnerable" as a soloist without the support of fellow MCs Young Sid and Tyree.

"But being part of Smashproof helped me a lot – it's developed me as an artist."

The 25-year-old said going solo had "been on the cards for a while" because Smashproof had firmly secured their spot among New Zealand's top hip-hop acts and bandmates Sid and Tyree had both already done so successfully.

"Its a big step. I'm pretty overwhelmed by it all but it's about time. It's Deach's time now."

Sid's 2007 debut The Truth won him the Maori Urban Album of the Year and a nomination for Hip-Hop Album of the Year at the 2008 New Zealand Music Awards. And his latest album, What Doesn't Kill Me, released earlier this year, is receiving considerably air play.

Tyree was nominated for two awards at the second annual Australian Urban Music Awards in 2007 and won Best Male Artist for his debut album Now or Never.

Smashproof's debut single Brother, from their album The Weekend, broke the 23-year-old record for the most consecutive weeks at No1 by a New Zealand artist on our the singles chart, going double platinum. It later went gold and also boasts two other Top 20 singles.

Deach's R&B style softens Sid's "street swagger" and adds flavour to Tyree's commercial sound, and he says his album will surprise Smashproof fans.

"A lot of people thought I'd put out an R&B party album but it's not... it's real deep and meaningful and really tells a lot of stories," he said.

Songs on Vision include one dedicated to his parents called Never Knew, which tells of their struggle after leaving Samoa and taking jobs on a factory floor in south Auckland, to one called Tears, about teenage heartbreak.

"I like people to know who I am. I think this album really portrays who I am as an artist and as a person," Deach said.
